Two draws in a row had raised a few eyebrows in Munich. Bayern’s answer on Saturday evening was emphatic: a 6-0 demolition of RB Leipzig at a sold-out Allianz Arena that lifted Vincent Kompany’s side to the top of the Bundesliga, at least until Sunday.

Luis Díaz was the star. The Colombian opened the scoring after twelve minutes, controlling a delicate chipped pass from Joshua Kimmich before finishing calmly, then added a second shortly after the restart and completed his hat-trick with a curling shot into the far corner midway through the second half. In between, Aleksandar Pavlović hammered in a second goal after a Díaz lay-off and Michael Olise swapped passes with Harry Kane before beating Maarten Vandevoordt from the edge of the box.

Kane himself had reason to celebrate. In his 100th Bundesliga appearance for the club, the England captain tapped in a Nathaniel Brown cutback for the fifth goal, taking his league tally for Bayern to 102.

Leipzig never recovered after a bright opening ten minutes. Their coach Martín Demichelis, a former Bayern defender who once partnered Kompany at Manchester City, had arrived with a team that had won all three home games this season without conceding, yet had still to collect a point away from home. That record now looks even worse. Captain David Raum had insisted beforehand that his team would travel south “with our chests out” – by half-time, with Bayern three goals up, there was little left of that swagger.

With Manuel Neuer still nursing a foot problem, Jonas Urbig kept a clean sheet. Bayern move level with Borussia Dortmund on 14 points but ahead on goal difference. Next up for Kompany’s team: Arsenal at home in Europe midweek, then an away date in Freiburg.
