Borussia Dortmund’s spell as league leaders lasted barely 24 hours. Bayern Munich won 3-1 at Freiburg on Sunday to move back ahead on goal difference, and they did it with assistant Aaron Danks in charge because head coach Vincent Kompany had been taken to hospital after falling ill during Friday’s session. He is said to be doing better.
The opener came from an unexpected player. After 16 minutes centre-back Dayot Upamecano blocked a Freiburg shot inside his own box, carried the ball upfield past two opponents and, after a return pass from Michael Olise, finished between the legs of goalkeeper Mio Backhaus. Serge Gnabry doubled the lead before the break with a similar low finish, his 100th goal in the Bundesliga.
Eight minutes from time Freiburg got back into it, courtesy of an own goal by Bayern’s Tom Bischof, who turned a cross past his keeper. Jonas Urbig made important saves, and a Sacha Boey goal was ruled out for offside, before Olise settled it in stoppage time, tapping into an unguarded goal once Backhaus had strayed well outside his area and lost the ball. That sets up next weekend’s Klassiker against Dortmund as a straight fight for first place.
Earlier, Hoffenheim beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 in heavy rain. Substitute Andrej Kramarić turned a tight game: he scored a 79th-minute penalty, which also happened to be goal number 1,000 for the club in the top flight, then laid on the second for Alexander Prass. In added time his shot hit the bar and Max Moerstedt knocked in the rebound. Leverkusen had gone five games without losing; Hoffenheim, for their part, kept a shutout for the first time this campaign.
