Club Brugge pulled off the upset of the Champions League’s second matchday on Tuesday, winning 4-3 at San Siro and leaving Inter Milan pointless. Nicolo Tresoldi scored three times for the Belgian side, and the result condemned Inter to a fourth straight defeat in the competition – a run the club had never suffered before. Cristian Chivu’s team had already lost their opener away to Real Madrid.

Despite early chances at both ends, the first goal took half an hour to arrive. Hakan Calhanoglu tripped the lively Carlos Forbs in the box and Tresoldi smashed the penalty high into the net. Inter captain Lautaro Martinez levelled just before the interval, ending a Champions League goal drought that stretched back to November 2025.

After the break the Italian striker’s opposite number took over. On 63 minutes Inter goalkeeper Josep Martinez charged out and missed the ball, Forbs nudged it on and Tresoldi rolled it into an unguarded goal. Eleven minutes later he pounced on a rebound to make it 3-1. Lautaro struck again with under ten minutes left, only for substitute Romeo Vermant to restore Brugge’s two-goal cushion three minutes from time. Ange-Yoan Bonny curled in a fine stoppage-time effort, his first goal in the competition, but it came too late.

There was a sharp twist in the visitors’ goal: Yann Sommer, for years Inter’s first-choice keeper, made several important saves against his old club. Chivu said afterwards that his players had to learn to keep their “balance”. Brugge coach Ivan Leko was shown a yellow card for dissent in the closing stages.

Other heavyweights had nervous nights too. Bayern Munich were held 3-3 by Norway’s Viking in Stavanger, while Barcelona needed to fight back before beating Galatasaray 4-1.
