Bayern Munich were a minute from sitting alone at the top of the Bundesliga on Saturday night. Instead, Dortmund substitute Fabio Silva swivelled inside the box in the 89th minute and drilled a low shot past Jonas Urbig, and the meeting of two unbeaten sides ended 2-2 at the Allianz Arena.

It was a strange homecoming for Harry Kane. The England captain walked out before kick-off carrying the Ballon d’Or he collected in London on Monday, yet his evening turned sour. Shortly before the hour he smashed a penalty against the crossbar after Felix Nmecha had blocked his volley with an outstretched arm, and later he struck the post from close range.

The goals came from elsewhere. Konrad Laimer pounced on a loose pass from Nmecha and, after Gregor Kobel saved his first attempt, tucked in the rebound in the 38th minute. Earlier, video review had wiped out a Jobe Bellingham effort because Carney Chukwuemeka clattered into Urbig. After the break Nico Schlotterbeck intercepted a Kane pass and the move ended with Serhou Guirassy levelling. Six minutes later Kane nodded a Joshua Kimmich cross back across goal, and Dayot Upamecano bundled it in.

Bayern, again led from the touchline by assistant Aaron Danks while Vincent Kompany recovers from his recent hospital stay, lost Ismael Saibari and Serge Gnabry to first-half injuries. Even so, they peppered Kobel’s goal, outshooting the visitors 23 to 12 according to FotMob, which named the Swiss keeper its player of the match. Substitute Lennart Karl even rattled the bar in stoppage time.

So after eight rounds the old rivals remain level on points. For Niko Kovac’s Dortmund the late leveller feels like a statement; for Bayern it is a reminder that dominance only counts when it ends up in the net.
