Palmeiras beat Fluminense 2-1 at the Maracanã on 14 October in the first leg of the Copa Libertadores semi-final. José Manuel “Flaco” López scored just before half-time, Marlon Freitas made it 2-0 in the 85th minute, and Wesley Natã headed a stoppage-time reply. The return leg is set for 21 October at 21:30 local time at Nubank Parque in São Paulo.

Fluminense controlled the ball for long stretches; Palmeiras waited for transitions. López’s opener came from a Piquerez–Andreas Pereira combination — the visitors’ first clear chance. Freitas finished a Felipe Anderson delivery for the second before Natã punished hesitation from goalkeeper Carlos Miguel to keep the tie alive.

Abel Ferreira served a suspension, so assistant João Martins took charge on the night. Forward Vitor Roque missed out with an ankle sprain. Argentine referee Facundo Tello handled the match. It was the clubs’ first Libertadores knockout meeting; their only previous cup meetings came in the 1971 group stage.

The semi-final winner will face either Flamengo or Estudiantes in the final. Before the return, both sides have Brazilian league fixtures — Palmeiras away to Athletico-PR, Fluminense at home to Santos. A draw in São Paulo would send Palmeiras through.

Efficiency beat territorial control. Fluminense stay in the tie but must score at least once on the road and shut down the counter-attacks that decided the Maracanã night. In São Paulo, Fluminense will likely have to open up earlier — an early away goal against them would make the climb steeper still.
