Top seed Alexander Zverev booked a Rolex Shanghai Masters semi-final berth by dismissing Alex de Minaur 6-4, 6-4 on 15 October. The German needed just under an hour and twenty minutes at Qizhong, landed ten aces and, per ATP figures, converted four of every five first-serve points.
A heavy forehand winner at 2-2 delivered the sole break of set one; three break points against him were wiped clean before he closed the set. Set two followed a similar script: two break points erased at 3-3, then an immediate counter-break. World No. 9 de Minaur rarely found depth answers; Zverev now leads their rivalry nine wins to four.
Calling the level a clear jump from earlier rounds, Zverev said he often felt he was pushing the speedy Australian off the baseline even on a surface de Minaur usually relishes. Year-end No. 1 honours are already locked; a climb to live world No. 1 could arrive as soon as early November.
Awaiting him is Alejandro Davidovich Fokina after Arthur Gea stopped at 1-4 in the opening set with a psoas problem. The Spaniard, seeded 25th, had ground through deciding-set tie-breaks versus Frances Tiafoe and Hubert Hurkacz and welcomed a short recovery window.
Zverev last reached this Shanghai stage in 2019; this is his third appearance there. A 62-14 season record and wins over Wu Yibing, Quentin Halys and Alexander Bublik leave him sharp for a rested foe and a shot at the final. Shanghai remains a key autumn gauge before the ATP Finals, and Zverev will want this surge to carry into the title match.
