One of Canada’s most important army training grounds has become the scene of a national tragedy. An explosion on Saturday afternoon at the Wainwright base, roughly 200 kilometres south-east of Edmonton, set off a fire that killed several people and injured many more. Military sources quoted by Global News put the death toll at no fewer than seven, with dozens hurt; the armed forces themselves have confirmed deaths and injuries but say they will release figures only once next of kin have been told.
According to those sources, live fire during a training exercise struck a gas line or gas well at about 4 p.m. local time. Ottawa’s defence ministry has not endorsed that version; officially the cause remains under investigation, and the federal police force RCMP has joined the inquiry. What is clear is that the weather made everything worse: winds gusting near 100 kilometres an hour drove the flames over the perimeter fence into the surrounding countryside. Local officials said shortly before midnight that the fire was being held.
Alberta’s health system switched into emergency mode. Several hospitals declared a Code Orange for mass casualties, ambulances were pulled in from across the province, and STARS air ambulance crews flew in from Edmonton and Saskatoon. Burn victims were flown to the provincial burn unit at the university hospital in Edmonton, and residents were asked to avoid emergency rooms unless absolutely necessary.
Defence Minister David McGuinty told reporters in Ottawa that he knew of no comparable event in years and called the situation “very, very active and delicate”. Prime Minister Mark Carney and Premier Danielle Smith promised close coordination between Ottawa and Edmonton, while the country’s top soldier, General Jennie Carignan, stressed that the welfare of soldiers and their families came first.
The disaster also touched Monday’s provincial referendum: an advance polling station in Wainwright had to close early on the last day of early voting, and voters were redirected to Lloydminster and Vermilion.
